During the winter months the road conditions can vary considerably and in a moments notice the weather can go from warm winter sunshine to overcast, dreary and very wet. Over the colder winter period you should take extra care on the roads and always be prepared for adverse conditions that can affect not just the roads but also the confidence of other drivers who may not adjust their driving behaviours in accordance with the weather.
We all know that when the roads are wet we need to take more care and reduce our speed. In the
driving theory test we learn that stopping distances increase when the roads are wet, or even icy and wet leaves and surface water can make the roads very slippery.
In a very leafy county like Surrey things like slippery leaves on the road play even more of a role when
driving in Surrey and we all need to be aware that roads may not be cleared of surface debris on some of the quieter country lanes as they may do in the larger towns.
Follow our
Surrey Driving Schools advice and drive safely this winter;
Check your car: When was the last time you had it serviced?
Check your fog lights. You may not have used these in some time and on frosty days when visibility is poor these will be essential
Check your wiper blades. If you suddenly hit heavy rain whilst out driving will your wipers stand up to the test?
Check your tyres. Do they adhere to the correct tread depth?
Give yourself extra time for any journey
Adjust your driving to what the weather and road conditions dictate are needed. Slow down, be more vigilant, take care.
Watch out for other drivers. You cannot assume others will take the same due care and attention as you so be aware that there may be other drivers not used to bad weather conditions.
